In the first sentence under the section of pantry cooking, you have typed "panty cooking". Now you have to be desperately frugal for that!

Hey VIE,

I think that's a great idea about leaving the ATM and checkbook at home and bringing only enough cash for what you need.

Financial guru Dave Ramsey suggests a similar system in which you place all the money you're going to spend on groceries for the month in an envelope and use only the money in the envelope for your supermarket shopping. Once the grocery envelope money is gone so is your grocery store spending for the month.

You would think even now that my kids are gone and there is just me and the cat I could be a better shopper. If ever there is a famine i can handle a family of 5 for a long time.
I was better when the kids were home. I knew that the stores put the stuff for kids at their eye level .
Now I am going to leave my ATM card home and the check book only enough cash for what I need.
Thanks and am going to use that ALLRecipes site for sure. Thanks

@Debbie Q. You're absolutely right. A well stock pantry is key to great supermarket savings. It also lets you stock up on items when they are drastically on sale - say 50% off (buy 1, get 1 free sales) and a list is ABSOLUTELY essential to keep you from buying unnecessary purchases.

@Nancy. Shopping with kids can bust any budget - LOL
I don't think many people realize how much money you can save with menu planning, especially when you plan you're meals around what's on sale. Maybe they think it takes too much work. But its a sure-fire way to save money.

I'm one that can resist impulse purchases at the grocery store unless I have children and/or husband with me. They are always tempted by something they see. I've learned (after many years) that I need to be prepared before I enter the store - with a list and a menu plan. Menu planning saves me a ton. I shop once every 2 weeks and family members know that when something is gone that's it until the next trip (the only thing I may have to buy between trips is milk). If I need to take care of postage, purchase a money order, etc. I visit the store in the morning on my way to work which keeps me out of the aisles as I know I am short on time.

When my husband and I were newly married, having babies and starting a new business we just didn't have one spare dime to spend on extra things and the store. So I started my "pantry". It took a while and it took some planning to decide what I needed to keep in stock so that I wasn't making those extra trips to the store. When it was finally finished I was able to work things so that I only made one trip to the grocery store every week. When I use something from the pantry shelves it is immediately added to the shopping list. I also use a detailed list when I shop and do not deviate from it. OK, MOST of the time I don't deviate from it. I am only human after all.
