Our family eats an evening meal together at home about 6 days a week. It's a home cooked meal too. Many evenings the girls are in the kitchen doing homework as I'm preparing the meal so we do get to visit with each other. And yes, they help in food preparation when I ask. Once the meal is finished, clean-up is a family effort. Families that don't spend time together in the kitchen are missing out on quality time in my opinion. Our conversations around the table are priceless. I've noticed that if we just let the girls talk and we listen, we can learn a lot about what's going on in their lives as well as that of their friends.

I enjoy cooking for my family and the girls know it. I catch them thumbing through cookbooks or magazines, marking recipes they think look good and then they ask if we can add it to the next menu plan. They don't necessarily take the initiative to prepare food but if asked, they'll help. I'm hoping that they are learning by example so that when they leave home they'll know their way around the kitchen.

Karyn,

I agree with you. I think television is one of the most anti-productivity items ever invented. Your kids are definitely better without it.

We're are blessed to not have a television and to homeschool, which means we have more time than most families to do lots of cooking. I hope my children will be better equipped than I - I only knew how to boil some noodles when I left home!
